Hernando County CattleWomen traces its roots back to 1976, when a group of dedicated women known as the CowBelles began sharing beef information and samples throughout the community. While that original program eventually closed due to changing times, the heart of that mission never left. In 2018, with the help of a few original members and a new generation of volunteers, Hernando County CattleWomen was proudly re-established to continue supporting agriculture in our county.
We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to educate and promote the safety, nutritional value, and importance of beef, while sharing the rich history and lifestyle of ranching and its positive impact on land stewardship and the environment. We work in cooperation with county, state, and national cattlemen and cattlewomen organizations, and we are passionate about encouraging local youth to develop a love for agriculture and beef production. Just as important to us is building strong relationships and camaraderie among like-minded women who care deeply about our rural communities.
In just a few short years since reorganizing, our members have raised and reinvested significant funds back into Hernando County through youth and community programs. Each year, we award a $1,000 college scholarship to a student pursuing an agriculture-related field, provide add-on awards and exhibitor recognition to local fair steer exhibitors, and recognize outstanding youth in both 4-H and FFA programs. We also offer Beef Grants, giving youth the opportunity to compete for $500 grants to help offset the costs of raising their beef projects.
We provide a variety of educational activities for our members, consumers, and youth focused on all things beef, including beef nutrition, cooking and food safety, animal care, and the role of cattle ranching in a sustainable food system. We also regularly give back to local women’s shelters and community organizations as part of our commitment to serving Hernando County families.
Beyond our local efforts, we participate in both county and state Florida CattleWomen events, where we provide beef samples, educational materials, and agricultural literacy activities for the public, including classroom visits and school-based programs.
As we continue to grow, we look forward to expanding our programs, strengthening our impact, and welcoming new members who share our passion for agriculture, youth, and community.
